UPS and DLD Lawyers donate $30,000 towards Scholarship for Hispanic Law Students
UPS and the partners at the nationally-expanding law firm of Demahy, Labrador , Drake, Victor, Payne & Cabeza (DLD Lawyers) have donated $15,000 each to the HNBA Legal Education Fund, as part of their CHAMPION sponsorship of the 2012 HNBA Tennis & Golf Tournament. The Tournament is the Legal Education Fund’s largest annual scholarship fundraiser. “UPS’s commitment to developing both women and minorities is a focus that extends beyond philanthropy and into UPS’s approach to business,” said Eduardo Martinez, director of philanthropy and corporate relations for The UPS Foundation. “We are pleased to support HBNA in pursuing its mission to build sustainable communities of the future by providing educational and leadership development opportunities today.”
One of the objectives of the Tournament is to bring Hispanic law students together with judges and practicing lawyers, thereby facilitating in a casual, non-intimidating environment, professional networks that these students generally lack given their socioeconomic status and youth. “We commend DLD Lawyers and UPS for their support of HNBA pipeline programs, which support Hispanic youth interested in the law. Their generous sponsorship enables us to host a unique event for the benefit of Hispanic law students,” said Roman D. Hernandez, Chairman of the Board of Directors of The HNBA Legal Education Fund. “Indeed, we have already heard from student participants who attended last year’s event of the positive impact this event had on them and their professional development.” Click here to read one student’s letter.
“A judge told me recently that this past summer she hired a student she met at the Tournament,” said HNBA Florida Regional President Teresita Chavez Pedrosa. “These networking opportunities are very valuable. DLD Managing Partner Frank Labrador recently hired a law student he met through an HNBA mentoring event.”
