University Counsel

The University of New Mexico is seeking highly qualified applicants for the position of University Counsel. As University Counsel, this position oversees and manages the provision of all legal services to the institution to ensure maximum protection of its legal rights and to maintain its operations within the limits prescribed by law. This position reports directly to the President of the University and may, when appropriate, provide advice on legal issues to the Regents of the University. The office of the University Counsel is comprised of sixteen lawyers, five paralegals and ten administrative staff with an annual budget of $1,175,000. This position provides strategic guidance, consultation, and support to senior University administrators and other members of upper management on a comprehensive range of legal and associated issues involved in carrying out the mission of the institution.

The University of New Mexico is the state’s largest institution of higher education and its flagship university. Today, the Albuquerque campus is home to approximately 29,000 students and another 9,600 faculty and staff occupy more than 300 facilities residing on 789 acres in the heart of the largest metropolitan area in the state. The city of Albuquerque lies a mile above sea level and has a high- desert climate that allows one to experience the contrast between desert and forest and the Sandia mountains. UNM has branch campuses in Gallup, Los Alamos, Taos, and Valencia County as well as a statewide network of teaching and learning provided by Extended University. UNM is also home to the Health Sciences Center, consisting of the School of Medicine and Colleges of Nursing and Pharmacy, New Mexico’s only Academic teaching hospitals, Level I trauma center and federally designated cancer research and treatment center. UNM has 12 schools and colleges and has New Mexico’s only Schools of Medicine, Law, Architecture and Pharmacy. UNM is ranked in the top 100 research universities in the United States and Canada. It is the only university in New Mexico with a Carnegie designation of research doctoral university “with very high activity (VHRU),” which recognizes the exceptional level of funded research and the array of degree programs. UNM is the only minority-majority flagship in the county and is one of only two Hispanic serving institutions in the country that is also Carnegie VHRU.

Minimum Qualifications: • Juris Doctorate from an American Bar Association accredited law school; at least 10 years of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Member of NM State Bar, or member of State Bar of another state or District of Columbia. Successful candidate who is not a member of the NM State Bar is required to obtain a temporary Public Employee Limited License issued by the NM Supreme Court and then become a member of the NM State Bar no later than 1 year after being hired.

Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check. Employees in this job title are subject to the terms and conditions of an employment contract. Employment contracts are typically subject to review and renewal on an annual basis.

Preferred Qualifications: • Experience advising institutional executive leadership on complex legal issues with multiple diverse constituencies. • Experience in reviewing and negotiating contracts with federal and state agencies, foundations, university and corporations. • Experience supporting compliance programs and institutional policies and committees. • Demonstrated experience working in an institution of higher education is preferred.
