University Associate General Counsel, Education Unit Position at CUNY

The Office of the General Counsel and Senior Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs seeks an experienced attorney to provide in-house legal guidance on staff and student related matters, particularly labor/employment, contract arbitrations, collective bargaining agreements, employee discipline, compliance, education policy, administrative proceedings, and litigation. As an University Associate General Counsel for Education, the successful attorney will represent the University and its campuses in labor/employment contract arbitrations and employee disciplinary proceedings; handle grievances and disciplinary arbitrations involving faculty and staff under collective bargaining agreements; assist outside counsel with litigations; handle administrative complaints with human rights and other agencies; investigate and respond to discrimination complaints filed with the EEOC, state and local human rights agencies, and the Office for Civil Rights of the US Department of Education; and investigate and respond to allegations of employee and student misconduct. The position reports to the Senior Associate General Counsel for the Education Unit.

Minimum Qualifications:
J.D. and five years related experience required. Membership in New York State Bar required.
Other Qualifications:
- Five years of related experience including at least three years in law practice required

- Experience with public sector employment, collective bargaining and labor issues strongly preferred

- Experience handling grievances and disciplinary arbitrations strongly preferred

- Experience investigating and responding to administrative and discrimination complaints, as well as allegations of misconduct preferred

- Knowledge of relevant state and federal employment laws and government compliance requirements applicable to employment and labor relations

- Work effectively in varied situations involving extensive client contact, adversarial proceedings and negotiations with diverse stakeholders of various organizational levels
- Strong work ethic, character, and personal integrity to work with the utmost professionalism, discretion, confidentiality, and diplomacy
