David J. Maldonado for HNBA Region XII (AR, LA, OK, TX) President
May 26, 2010
I will be nominated pursuant to Article XI, section 5(b) for Region XII president of HNBA. I was admitted to the state bar of Texas in 1986, I am in good standing and I have not been disciplined in any state. I reside in Plano, Texas, a suburb of Dallas.
My involvement with HNBA and Dallas HBA, began in 1997. I was privileged to serve from 2003-2004 under President Carlos Singh on the Corporate Advisory Board for HNBA. I currently serve as Senior Vice President and National Diversity Coordinator of Special Counsel, Inc. Several years ago, I led the creation of three Special Counsel, Inc. Hispanic Law Student Scholarships that were initially administered by the Hispanic National Bar Foundation (HNBF) and subsequently by the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, although the program retains the HNBF identification. Those scholarships continue. Special Counsel has served in the past as a sponsor of HNBA, and, most recently, of affiliate Dallas Hispanic Bar Association events. I have represented Special Counsel at numerous HNBA or affiliate events, including the national conference in Los Angeles and the midyear meeting in Miami. I have 11 years of commercial litigation practice prior to my current position, in small-to large and local to national law firms.
My experience with HNBA is a positive one. I am the current Region President of Region XII. In my position with Special Counsel I created a national program of liaisons consisting of selected Special Counsel leaders who are the primary contact with the major majority and minority bar associations. I serve as Special Counsel’s liaison to HNBA. My sense is that the Region XII is filled with potential and I think my past experience demonstrates that I can assist in meeting goals the HNBA has for this region. I have worked well and long with the Hispanic lawyer leaders in Dallas and others in Houston and Austin, as well.
I bring leadership experience to this position. I have led the national Federal Bar Association younger lawyers division, served on the ABA Young Lawyers Executive Council, and served for 6 years as the presiding judge of the city of Cockrell Hill, Texas, a city adjacent to Dallas with a predominantly Spanish-speaking populace. I also served as the president of the Dallas area Princeton alumni association and served on my high school alma mater board of trustees.
I am running for this office to continue my efforts to enable HNBA to have a strong voice among Hispanic lawyers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas. My goals for this position are to strengthen HNBA ties with existing members and affiliates and to lay the foundation for increase in membership in this region. I also want to continue my work in seeking successfully the endorsements of federal judges by HNBA. This past HNBA year, with the assistance of my deputy regional presidents, I have successfully presented three candidates for endorsement by HNBA.
In these difficult economic times, it is important for members and non-members alike to understand what role HNBA can play in their career and lives and I believe a strong regional president can help accomplish this by continuous regional representation with HNBA officers, a consistent stream of communication with the members and a plan to reach out to lapsed or potential members of HNBA. I believe my career experience and that with associations, in particular HNBA, will hold me in good stead as a Region XII president and I very much look forward to continuing my service with HNBA.
