SENIOR LABOR RELATIONS / LABOR RELATIONS REPRESENTATIVE

MTA METRO-NORTH RAILROAD, one of the largest commuter railroads in the United States has an excellent opportunity for a Senior Labor Relations Representative and a Labor Relations Representative.  Both positions will provide administration and interpretation of the Collective Bargaining Agreements to protect Metro-North financial interests and to prevent labor disputes.  At the senior level, you will also serve as the principle advocate for Metro-North Railroad at labor arbitration hearings.

 

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

As the Senior Labor Relations Representative, you will serve as a liaison between Line Managers and Union Representatives.  Participate in monthly conferences with union representatives to discuss grievance and discipline appeals. Prepare letters of decision to Union General Chairman. Determine and resolve inquiries from Line Management regarding the application or interpretation of labor agreements.  Respond to correspondence from outside agencies, employees.  Resolve day to day disputes between management and labor.  You will prepare briefs, review discipline and grievance records for arbitration.  Determine resolution and/ or response for action.  Act as Company advocate at arbitration hearings. Provide leadership and management on the interpretation and application of Collective Bargaining Agreements.  Provide formal and informal instruction to Supervisors and Managers on the application of the labor agreements and on resolving disputes.

As the Labor Relations Representative, you will arrange, attend and participate in monthly conferences with union representatives to discuss grievance and discipline appeals; review claims, grievances and discipline transcripts to discuss at meeting; prepare letters of decision to Union General Chairman. Answer telephone inquiries and written requests from line management regarding the application or interpretation of labor agreements.  Respond to correspondence from outside agencies, employees. Prepare briefs, review discipline and grievance records for arbitration.  Act as Company advocate at arbitration hearings. Meet with supervisors and managers of other departments to discuss labor issues and implications and application of various rules of the agreements.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Working knowledge of federal and state employment and labor laws.

Working knowledge of mediation techniques.

Familiarity with the interpretation and application of  FMLA and ADA.

Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills.

Excellent oral and written communication and effective platform presentation skills.

Strong  interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with all levels in the Company and union officials,

Working knowledge of collective bargaining agreements, arbitration procedures and the ability to analyze labor issues and apply the agreements to those issues.

Must be able to conform to specific time limitations and deadlines.

Strong ability to advocate for the Company at arbitration hearings.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and/or comparable applications.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
SENIOR LABOR RELATIONS REPRESENTATIVE

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Labor or Industrial Relations or related field.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in Labor Relations, Labor contract administration including grievance handling and the presentation of arbitration cases.

 

  • A Law degree or related Master’s degree with two years related experience may substitute for the above required experience.

 

LABOR RELATIONS REPRESENTATIVE

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial/Labor Relations or related field.
  • Minimum two (2) years experience in Labor Relations, Labor contract administration including grievance handling and the presentation of arbitration cases.
  • A Law degree or Master’s degree may be substituted for experience.
