HNBA PARTNERSHIP WITH BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS

HNBA Florida Region is proud to introduce our partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS). BBBS’ mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported relationships that change children’s lives for the better, forever. The collaboration is made possible with a grant from the MetLife Foundation. The purpose of the grant is to work with 20 Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies to strengthen educational outcomes for Hispanic youth.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Miami has been selected as one of the 8 communities to begin this partnership.  In collaboration with BBBS of Greater Miami, HNBA Florida Region will be participating in the following programs:

SCHOOL-BASED PROGRAM: As a volunteer you will be paired with a child at a nearby elementary school and meet for an hour or so, each week during the school year. Visits take place during school hours or in the aftercare program from 2:30pm to 6:00pm. Activities with your mentee might include playing educational games, reading together, or just talking. You and your mentee are not permitted to leave the school premises at any time. BBBS has programs in several elementary schools in Miami-Dade County. There are a number of available schools, however, please be aware HNBA has chosen to adopt Ponce De Leon Middle School and encourages its members to volunteer here.

WORKPLACE MENTORING PROGRAM: HNBA members will be paired with high school students and go on field trips to expose the students to all aspects of the legal field. The high school students will be selected from South Ridge Senior High, which has a legal academy. BBBS will transport these students to the location chosen for that month’s field trip. The attorney does not have to drive the student, just meet the group at the location chosen for that month. The monthly field trips will be for 4 hours during the school year. Students will gain valuable exposure to workplace practices and career opportunities. We are currently coordinating with private attorneys, judges and law schools to host our field trips.  We would like to offer these students the opportunity to experience the broad range of the legal field, including the judge’s view, the civil litigator’s view, the transactional attorney’s view, the law student’s view just to name a few. Therefore, field trips will be to a judge’s chambers and/or court room, a transactional attorney’s office where the attorney hosting will provide a small presentation as to what types of work they do, a law school where a Dean and law student can explain the law school experience, etc. We are looking for volunteers to be mentors to these high school students as well as volunteers to host these students either in your courtroom or office.

OTHER WAYS TO GET INVOLVED: There are many activities being planned and many ways for you to get involved outside of being mentors. We are looking for volunteers and individuals who are willing to help in whatever way possible. In addition, there are other mentor programs that BBBS offers, such as couples mentoring, which may be a better fit for your individual needs.  Although not one of the programs being focused by HNBA Florida Region any participation in the lives of these children will make a difference.

If you are interested in becoming a mentor through one of the programs mentioned above or one of BBBS other programs, please fill out the Volunteer Application. If you would like to volunteer in other ways, such as hosting the Work Place Mentoring Program or coordinating on other activities, please contact Lisa Capote at 786-871-5683 or lisa@arrastia-law.com.
