MABAH, HNBA, and HISBA Participate in HBA Law Day

Feb. 25, 2012 | Houston, TX – Lawyers from the Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA), the Mexican American Bar Association of Houston (MABAH), the Hispanic Bar Association of Houston (HISBA) and Houston Bar Association (HBA) and volunteers were present at the Centros Familiares de la Comunidad in a Houston inner-city neighborhood to lead the Law Day activities for the HBA’s Law Day Program. At the workshop, attorneys, paralegals and law students worked with Latino children to assist them in drawing posters relating to the ABA Law Day theme: “No Courts, No Justice, No Freedom.”  MABAH President Joe Matta introduced Benny Agosto, President of the HNBA, and a Director of MABAH, who spoke to the children about the role of lawyers and their future.  HISBA President-Elect Danny Ramirez and HISBA Immediate Past President Johnny Garza read to children the selected Law Day book, The Cupcake Thief, by Ellen Jackson.  Also present to speak to the children were Justice Kem Frost, of the Texas 14th Court of Appeals, Judge Richard Vara, Harris County Justice of the Peace, and special guest, Justice Elsa Alcala, of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, who spoke about the Law Day theme and her reflections.  Justice Alcala is the first Latina to serve on her court, which is the state’s court of last resort for criminal appeals.  MABAH, HISBA and HBA have received awards from the ABA and State Bar of Texas in each of the past 2 years for their leadership in conducting these workshops.
