Litigation Fellow – Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll PLLC

Litigation Fellow – Public Client Practice

The Public Client Practice at Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll PLLC is accepting applications for a special litigation fellow with 4-6 years of experience.

Cohen Milstein’s nationally recognized Public Client Practice offers a unique opportunity to represent states and municipalities as outside counsel in civil law enforcement investigations and litigation.  State Attorneys General engage the Public Client Practice on high-profile and high-stakes matters that serve important policy interests, such as stopping widespread consumer and health care fraud.  Our extensive portfolio includes litigation and investigations in the mortgage, banking, health care, labor and education industries, as well as a bipartisan client list.

Excellent academic credentials and superb legal research and writing skills are required. Applicants who have completed federal or state supreme court clerkships (not internships / externships) are strongly preferred. Experience litigating complex cases, including handling large-scale civil discovery and drafting substantive briefs and motions, both with minimal supervision, is required.  A background in the areas of consumer protection, health care fraud and false claims is desirable.  Candidates also must demonstrate the sophistication necessary to interact with high-level government officials and the discretion required to manage confidential information.  Strong organizational and time-management skills are necessary, as is the ability to work independently.

While the position is at will, the fellowship has a two year term, with the potential for longer-term employment dependent upon the needs of the Public Client Practice.  Salary is commensurate with experience.

About the Public Client Practice

In 2009, Cohen Milstein launched the Public Client Practice.  Former District of Columbia Attorney General Linda Singer heads this litigation and investigation practice, which is dedicated to the needs of government and other public-sector clients.  The National Law Journal named Linda Singer one of “Washington’s 50 Most Influential Women Lawyers.”  The National Law Journal named Betsy Miller, also a partner in the Public Client Practice and Ms. Singer’s former Chief of Staff, to its list of Washington’s “Top 40 Under 40 Rising Legal Stars.”

The Public Client Practice serves as outside counsel to state Attorneys General and other state and local agencies on large-scale investigations and litigation.  The Practice works closely with its clients to investigate and litigate enforcement actions that recoup funds owed to the state or its residents and achieve key equitable remedies and policy reform.  Lawyers in the Public Client Practice also interact regularly with the federal government on the states’ behalf.

The Public Client Practice has represented Attorneys General in a variety of confidential investigations and public lawsuits involving fraudulent mortgage practices, deceptive practices in the sale and marketing of prescription drugs, misclassification of employees as independent contractors, and a range of other consumer protection and civil rights matters.
