Legislative Day & Capital Awards Dinner 2010
On May 12, 2010, the HNBA held its Legislative Day and Capital Awards Dinner. This year’s event was co-chaired by Liz Lopez and Alejandra Castillo. HNBA members from 20 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico participated in meetings with 84 bi-partisan Members of Congress. During these meetings, the HNBA advocated on important legislative issues, including (1) an HNBA model for an earned and secure path to citizenship and (2) increased compensation and diversity in the federal judiciary.
Legislative Day was kicked off with a Welcome Reception at Jones Day on May 11, 2010, where Congressman Ben Ray Luján (NM-3) served as keynote speaker. On May 12th, a Congressional Breakfast & Policy Briefing was held at the Capitol Visitors Center, where Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) served as keynote speaker. In addition, Leslie Sanchez, CEO, Impacto Group, served as moderator, and Andres Ramirez, Senior Vice President, NDN, and Estuardo V. Rodríguez, Jr., Director, Hispanics for a Fair Judiciary, served as panelists.
During the day, participants met with Members of both the House and Senate and gathered in the evening for the Capital Awards presentation. This year’s Capital Awards recipients were Senator Charles E. Schumer (D-NY), Senator Lindsey O. Graham (R-SC) and Congressman Luis V. Gutierrez (IL-4). On May 13th, participants attended a briefing by senior level administration officials at the White House.
