On May 6, 2009, the HNBA held its Legislative Day and 2nd Annual Capital Awards Dinner. This year’s event was co-chaired by Alejandra Castillo, HNBA Chair, Executive Endorsement Committee and Liz Lopez HNBA National Vice President of External Affairs. Over 100 HNBA members from 20 states and Puerto Rico participated in meetings with 75 bi-partisan Members of Congress. During these meetings, the HNBA advocated on important policy issues, including Passage of Comprehensive Immigration Reform in the 111th Congress; increase in diversity and compensation for the Federal Judiciary; Termination of the Immigration and Nationality Act §267(g) Program and Passage of the End Racial Profiling Act (ERPA); and Full and Accurate Count of Hispanics for the 2010 Census (see Advocacy Position Statements). At the HNBA Legislative Day breakfast, Chair Charles B. Rangel (NY-15) and Representative Luis V. Gutierrez (IL-4) discussed with HNBA members their respective priorities for the 111th Congress.

During the Capital Awards Dinner, HNBA honored Chair Nydia M. Velazquez (NY-12) and Representative Linda T. Sánchez (CA-39) for continuing to redefine the meaning of excellence through their leadership and commitment to their communities (see Comcast video link and event pictures).

On May 7, 2009, HNBA Legislative Day participants attended a White House briefing. Participants were welcomed by Stephanie Valencia, White House Office of Public Liaison and met with key members of President’s Obama Administration, including Tina Tchen, Director, Office of White House Office of Public Engagement; Gregory Craig, Counsel to the President; Heather Higginbottom, Deputy Director, White House Domestic Policy Council; William Ramos, Director, Intergovernmental Affairs, Department of Commerce; Cecilia Muñoz, Office of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs; Michael Camuñez, Special Assistant to the President; Adolfo Carrion, Director, White House Office of Urban Affairs; and Michael Strautmanis, Chief of Staff, Office of Public Liaison and Intergovernmental Affairs.
