Legal Aid Director of Litigation — Portland Oregon

Description of Position:  The director of litigation is responsible for the quality and quantity of advocacy in Oregon’s legal aid programs.  The director of litigation generates enthusiasm and excitement for the programs’ advocacy, helping attorneys see themselves as leaders, and helping people gain confidence and excel in their work.  She or he works to improve the programs’ capacity to provide quality representation in more difficult and complicated cases when they arise.  A significant part of the assignment is to ensure that less experienced staff attorneys have an appropriate professional mentor and trainer to advise or co-counsel in significant litigation.  The director of litigation will serve as advisor or co-counsel in some significant litigation. The director of litigation will play a central leadership role in implementing that most recent strategic plan that calls for increasing systemic advocacy in order to efficiently and effectively address the needs of our client communities.

This director of litigation supervises four other members of the State Support Unit (SSU), most of whom have thirty years of experience providing leadership on poverty law issues related to litigation, family, public benefits, housing, and employment law.  The SSU coordinates statewide task forces and training on family law, employment law, housing law, public benefits law and legal practice skills. The director of litigation is responsible for overseeing some statewide attorney training events. The SSU serves attorneys working in legal aid offices located in seventeen communities across Oregon.  The SSU supports advocacy in two statewide legal aid programs and two countywide legal aid programs.

This position provides an exciting opportunity for an experienced attorney who wants to use teaching and leadership skills to increase the quality and quantity of advocacy in Oregon.  The director of litigation can make a real difference for low-income clients in Oregon.

Requirements:  Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income communities.  A high degree of initiative and willingness to work collaboratively.  Strong interpersonal communication skills.  Extensive experience handling complex litigation at the trial and appellate levels in state and federal courts.  Experience teaching advocacy skills to attorneys and acting as a mentor.  Experience as a manager and leader in law firm or legal aid office.  Experience working on legal aid issues and the systems used to provide high quality civil legal services to low-income people.  Knowledge of legal aid in Oregon and connections to the leaders in Oregon is a plus.  Must have at least fifteen years of relevant experience.
