REPORTS TO: The HNBA President; serves at the pleasure of the HNBA Executive Committee and Board of Governors

The position of Executive Director for the Hispanic National Bar Association (“HNBA” or “Association”) is immediately available for a qualified person. The Executive Director will serve as the Chief Operating Officer of the Association and must have the highest integrity and leadership skills. Because the Executive Director is charged with conducting and overseeing all aspects of the day to day affairs of the Association, the Executive Director must have the stature, credibility, tact, judgment and written and oral communications skills required to represent the HNBA in interactions with members, government officials, sponsors, media representatives, members of the HNBA Board of Governors (“Board”) and others. The successful candidate will also have the management and business skills and integrity required to manage the HNBA’s National Office and staff, finances and other core functions. The Executive Director must be proactive and make timely recommendations to the President, the Board and the Executive Committee on a whole host of issues.

The Executive Director shall have the following education and professional experiences and demonstrated understanding of and/or commitment to the Hispanic community and legal issues affecting Hispanics in the U.S.:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; J.D., MBA or other advanced degrees preferred;
  • Three of more years experience and supervision in office management;
  • Bar or legal association experience;
  • Significant fundraising experience; and
  • A demonstrated understanding of and ability to manage financial matters and to oversee the financial and day- to-day operations of an organization with a multi-million dollar budget.

DETAILED PROFILE:
The HNBA Executive Director will assist the President in implementing the Association’s priorities, policies, goals and objectives as established by the Board of Governors, the Executive Committee, and as set forth in the Association’s Bylaws. The Executive Director will also manage the Association’s facilities, personnel, finances, and records in order to implement the Association’s policies and to administer the day-to-day business of the Association by management of the HNBA National Office, its programs, services, and activities.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

I. THE PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

  • Work with the President, the HNBA Executive Committee, and the HNBA Board of Governors to implement and monitor policies and priorities that further the mission of the Association;
  • Coordinate the communication of the Association with elected leaders and professional staff of law-related organizations in the U.S. and help the Board of Governors maintain liaisons with Bar Associations throughout the United States;
  • Manage staff member relationships at all levels of the HNBA in order to make the most efficient use of the HNBA resources;
  • Attend meetings and functions as an HNBA representative when the President or President-Elect are not available;
  • Assist the President in the planning and coordination of HNBA Board meetings and Board activities;
  • Compile and maintain HNBA records including agendas, minutes, resolutions, policies, press releases, committee reports, after-action reports on HNBA events and activities that occur throughout the United States;
  • Assist in the organization and planning of HNBA events such as the Annual Convention, Mid-Year Conference and National Moot Court Competition, the HNBA international conference, HNBA Legislative Day, HNBA receptions held throughout the various HNBA regions; and
  • Perform such other tasks and duties as may be requested by the President, the HNBA Executive Committee, or Board of Governors.

II. WITH RESPECT TO THE HNBA NATIONAL OFFICE, THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR WILL BE EXPECTED TO HANDLE THE FOLLOWING RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee HNBA staff personnel; manage the business affairs of the national office, including preparation and oversight of budgets and payment of invoices;
  • Direct the staff and office resources, as necessary, to carry-out the policies, goals, and objectives of the HNBA;
  • Ensure the office and its activities comply with applicable laws;
  • Coordinate the timely submission of materials for Continuing Legal Education (CLE) accreditation, where applicable, from HNBA events such as the Annual Convention, the HNBA international legal conference, the HNBA Mid-Year Conference;
  • Provide appropriate staff and administrative support to HNBA event planners to facilitate completion of various HNBA events nationally to ensure that the HNBA continues to be held in high regard; and
  • Provide appropriate staff and administrative support to all HNBA Divisions, Committees and Substantive Law Sections.

III. THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SHALL HAVE THE FOLLOWING BACKGROUND SKILLS:

  • COMMUNICATION: Excellent writing and verbal skills;
  • PROFESSIONAL INITIATIVE: Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and accomplish time-sensitive tasks; independent initiative sufficient to allow completion of programs and initiatives with minimal oversight; ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion of matters of concern to the Association;
  • SUPERVISORY: Experience in office management, including supervising and evaluating staff, administering office functions, administering office financials and accounting, and establishing goals and priorities for meeting responsibilities of a national office;
  • CONFIDENTIALITY: Experience in maintaining strict confidence of all business, confidential and proprietary information of an Association, including the establishment and maintenance of procedures to prevent the public dissemination of such confidential information;
  • PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE: Demonstrated skills and experience in drafting policy statements, press releases, official correspondence and other similar documents and materials; ability to understand and digest legal and policy issues, policy statements, correspondence, and other similar materials in preparation of issue statements and other papers concerning national policy; and
  • PROBLEM SOLVING: Demonstrated skills and experience in meeting challenges in working with a diverse Board; identification and analysis of pertinent, legal, legislative and social issues; resolution of problems related to logistical and administrative planning of Board meetings; effectively addressing personnel issues and office challenges.

IV. THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SHOULD HAVE THE FOLLOWING EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCES:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; J.D., MBA or other advanced degrees preferred;
  • Experience in direct management, supervision of staff members, and office management, preferably with non-profit Hispanic Associations;
  • A demonstrated understanding of and ability to manage financial matters and to oversee the financial and day- to-day operations of an organization with a multi- million dollar budget;
  • Fundraising experience;
  • Advocacy experience in Washington, D.C.;
  • Understanding of and/or commitment to Hispanic (legal) issues;
  • Bar and/or legal association experience; and
  • Fluency in Spanish is highly preferred.
