HBA-DC Joins Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GWHCC)
Sept. 25, 2012: HBA-DC has joined the GWHCC as part of continuing efforts to provide benefits and networking opportunities to its members. The GWHCC is a membership driven organization that supports the economic development of the Washington, DC metropolitan region by facilitating the success of Latino and other minority-owned businesses and the communities they serve through networking, advocacy, education, and access to capital. HBA-DC Holds Evening With Commissioner Luis A. Aguilar
On September 19, 2012, and as part of its “An Evening with” series, HBA-DC held an event with Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Commissioner Luis A. Aguilar. Commissioner Aguilar spoke about his experience as an immigrant and his career path from law school to private practice and to one of the top legal posts at the SEC. HBA-DC Members Attend Annual Convention, Accept HNBA Affiliate of the Year Award
Aug. 29, 2012: HBA-DC has received Affiliate of the Year Award from HNBA! HBA-DC President Lyzka P. DeLaCruz and other HBA-DC leaders accepted the award at this year’s HNBA Annual Convention. HBA-DC is proud of this recognition, which would have been impossible without its many committed members. Congratulations to all the awardees and to the entire HBA-DC community! Other notable honors included: HBA-DC Vice President of Membership Juan Sempertegui received the Region President of the Year Award, HBA-DC Past President Marianela Peralta received the Latina Attorney of the Year Award, HBA-DC Past President Ambassador Mari Carmen Aponte received the HNBA Latina Commission Award, HBA-DC Past President Christina Sarchio received the Pro Bono Award (individual). Tens of other HBA-DC members and leaders attended the convention and spoke on CLE panels, including HBA-DC Past President Robert Raben, HBA-DC President-Elect Jaime Areizaga-Soto and HBA-DC President Lyzka DeLaCruz.
HBA-DC Hosts Successful La Familia BBQ
On Saturday July 28, 2012, HBA-DC celebrated summer with our annual La Familia BBQ at Virginia Highlands Park in Pentagon City. We had over 45 people attend and enjoy grilled hamburgers, turkey burgers, arroz con pollo, hot dogs, and watermelon. This family friendly event featured a piñata for the many kids who attended. Members contributed side dishes and desserts and were able to socialize in the shade on a warm but pleasant summer afternoon. Our sincere thanks to Kenia Seoane Lopez and her family for bringing nearly all the food and for their role as grill masters. We also extend a very big thank you to Ivan Carpio for coming to the park very early to secure our picnic area.
HBA-DC Hosts Successful Annual Summer Associate Reception
On July 17, 2012, HBA-DC hosted its annual reception for summer associates, legal interns, and law clerks. The reception was organized in co-sponsorship with the HNBA and hosted by Covington & Burling, LLP. HBA-DC President Lyzka DeLaCruz and DC Bar President and Senior Counsel at Covington & Burling, Thomas S. Williamson Jr., welcomed approximately 60 guests who attended the successful reception. Mr. Williamson also spoke about different career paths in the DC area legal market and encouraged law students to become active members of the DC legal community. Additionally, the program featured an information session about opportunities at the Department of Labor and its Honors Program. HBA-DC and HNBA thank Covington & Burling for their generosity in hosting the event.
HBA-DC Writes to Secretary Napolitano
On July 11, 2012, HBA-DC wrote to Secretary Napolitano commending the issuance of the policy providing deferred action to certain undocumented youth. The text of the letter is available at http://www.hbadc.org/?page=advocacy.
HBA-DC Hosts Successful Happy Hour for CARECEN
On June 28, 2012, HBA-DC hosted a Happy Hour featuring the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN), the latest in a series of networking Happy Hours that feature a legal service provider in the Washington, D.C. area. The event took place at the rooftop of Local 16 in the historic U Street area of Washington, D.C. Members enjoyed networking with colleagues over Happy Hour prices and appetizers. Over $300 were raised for CARECEN, a local non-profit organization that provides direct services in the areas of immigration, housing, citizenship and civic participation, and community support for the Latino community. Andrea Rodriguez, CARECEN’s Director of Legal Services, spoke on behalf of CARECEN, describing opportunities to get involved with the organization in pro bono activities such as assisting with Deferred Action applications for eligible young people staring in mid-August. HBA-DC President Lyzka DeLaCruz urged members to volunteer. On behalf of the event co-sponsors, Juan Sempertegui, Region V President for the Hispanic National Bar Association, and Samuel Urueta, Adviser to the Secretary General for the Inter-American Bar Association, also made remarks. HBA-DC Holds an Evening with SEC Commissioner Troy Paredes
On June 6, 2012, and as part of its “An Evening with” series, HBA-DC held an event with Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Commissioner Troy A. Paredes. Commissioner Paredes spoke about his career path from law school, to private practice, to the world of academia at Washington University School of Law, to one of the leadership posts at the SEC. Commissioner Paredes also spoke about his love for the work that he does and the honor of serving his country during such an important time in the economic life of the nation. The HBA-DC is very thankful to Commissioner Paredes and the law firm of Clifford Chance for hosting the event.
