New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI) has launched a search for an exceptional leader to serve as its next Executive Director. NYLPI’s mission is to advance equality and civil rights with a focus on health justice, disability rights and environmental justice, through the power of community lawyering and partnerships with the private bar. Through community lawyering, NYLPI puts its legal, policy, and community organizing expertise at the service of New York City communities and individuals. NYLPI’s partnerships with the private bar strengthen its advocacy and connect community groups and non-profits with critical legal assistance.
The next Executive Director of NYLPI will inherit: a legacy of extraordinary accomplishment; an exceptionally strong and dedicated staff; a stable budget and program mission; solid management systems; a resourceful and supportive Board of Directors; rich relationships with the bench and bar in New York City; and a wide spectrum of exciting projects.
The successful candidate for this position will have deep passion for the mission of NYLPI; demonstrated commitment to civil rights; ability to sustain and develop a diverse set of relationships supporting NYLPI’s work; vision and creativity in pursuing new opportunities for the organization; energy and enthusiasm; an ability to project authority and vision with collegiality and a collaborative style; business acumen; experience working with and cultivating a board; and a strong appetite and ability for raising funds from multiple sources. Experience leading a team of highly talented and motivated professionals who are committed to a culture of collegiality, transparency, mutual respect, and support is essential. Requirements include a JD degree, experience practicing law, and a minimum of 10 years’ experience in nonprofit, academic, business, or government agency management.
