Carmen M. Segarra for HNBA Vice President of Sections and Committees
My name is Carmen M. Segarra and I ask for your vote for HNBA Vice-President of Committees. Throughout my legal career, I have been involved in the HNBA to advance the professional development of our lawyers and to empower our members to better service the Latino Community. If elected, I hope to further this development by expanding our sections and committees and the breadth of their work, recruiting new talent, and fostering increased collaboration among our members. We must be at the forefront of the legal community and we must have an active legal voice to do so.
I am a 1998 graduate of Cornell Law School and a member in good standing of the bars of Puerto Rico (2001), Massachusetts (2002), and New York (2005). I received my Master of Arts in French Cultural Studies at Columbia University and my Bachelor of Arts in History at Harvard. I am a Puerto Rican attorney working in New York at Societe Generale as their Private Banking Legal Counsel responsible for setting up their U.S. Private Banking and Wealth Management Division. Since August 2009, I have been a regular contributor for FoxNews The Strategy Room and Univision National News. Previously, I served as Altura Capital LLC’s General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer, as Senior Legal Counsel at Citigroup, as Legal Counsel at Bank of America, as an associate at McConnell Valdes, and as an Associate Professor at the University of Puerto Rico.
My HNBA Involvement
I continue to be an active HNBA member through the years as I believe in its mission and really enjoy connecting and working with my friends and colleagues there. Previously, I was HNBA Regional President of New York from 2005-2006; Deputy Regional President of New York from 2004 to 2005; Vice-Chair of the 2004 HNBA Annual Convention in New York; and CLE Chair for the 2008 HNBA Mid-Year Conference and National Moot Court Competition titled Latinos on Wall Street in New York. When I was CLE Chair, I made sure that all panels were as diverse as possible, with a guideline that all panels consist of at least 50% women – an important goal for our community.
My current job with Societe Generale as their Head of Private Banking – Legal will facilitate my goals as outlined below. I am responsible for all legal work related to the private banking/wealth management area, including hiring and managing of outside counsel and other contractors. I will be exposed to and actively seek legal talent as I work to fortify Societe General’s Private Banking Legal division while collaborating with other legal departments.
My main goals are to:
- Work closely with the ABA, State Bars, and Bars of Color in sponsoring joint panels with our Sections and Committees.
- Work to ensure that each committee and section either submits an article for Noticias, our HNBA Journal or another Legal outlet.
- Assist in developing a Lawyers in Transition Program that fully utilizes and integrates the Sections and Committees of the HNBA.
- Actively Address the Needs of Emerging Hispanic Communities by recruiting under-represented regional lawyers to serve on Sections and Committees.
- Expand Our Sections and Committees’ work on amicus briefs on issues impacting the Latino community.
I want to help make the HNBA a truly exceptional professional association that is able to service the needs of our lawyers and greater Latino community. Fortifying and expanding our sections and committees is a necessary step to make this collective goal a reality. I hope that you will give me the opportunity to serve as VP of Committees so that we can accomplish this together.
