Associate Director of Advocacy

 The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), located in downtown Washington, DC, seeks an experienced strategist to join our team.  You will play a key leadership role in executing AILA’s advocacy agenda in the legislative and policy arenas.  This is an excellent opportunity to make a difference at the national level, work with lawmakers and policymakers, and advocate for change in immigration law and policy.

In this dynamic role, you will be responsible for:

National AdvocacyLeads AILA’s direct lobbying work with Congress and the administration on selected immigration issues.  Works with AILA’s leadership to shape policy positions on issues such as: comprehensive immigration reform, legalization of the undocumented, family immigration, the DREAM Act and deferred action for Dreamers, deportation and enforcement policy, due process, detention reform, asylum and reform of the immigration court system.  Serves as a legal expert (including drafting, reviewing, and evaluating legislative proposals) in working with congressional offices.

Coalition Building:  Plays a pivotal role representing AILA in established national, DC-based, or regional coalitions and campaign efforts.  Builds relationships between AILA and non-profit organizations involved in providing direct services to or advocating on behalf of immigrant populations and for the rights and liberties of both citizens and noncitizens alike.

Public Education and RepresentationRepresents AILA at public policy briefings and immigration law and policy conferences, providing legislative updates and substantive policy and legal analysis.  Communicates AILA’s vision and promotes progressive immigration policies.

Media AdvocacyWorks with AILA’s advocacy and communications teams to develop message points and sound bites on immigration issues for use with media.  Serves as resource in providing background and quotes to media on pertinent immigration issues.

Requirements

5 years experience with immigration law and policy required.  Strong grasp of strategy and of the political process required.  Capacity to build and sustain partnerships, coalitions and alliances is required.  Position requires strong writing, editing, organizational and interpersonal skills.  Proficiency in MSOffice is a must.  Direct lobbying experience strongly preferred. J.D. degree preferred.  Experience in developing, implementing and overseeing advocacy campaigns, a plus.  Spanish fluency, a plus.
