The HNBA Renews its Call for Comprehensive Immigration Reform
April 30, 2010 – Yesterday afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Senators Richard Durbin (D-IL), Charles Schumer (D-NY), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) announced a preliminary framework of comprehensive immigration reform legislation. “The framework is an important step toward reform legislation, but it must be followed by a bipartisan commitment to pass legislation in both Houses of Congress,” stated Mr. Román D. Hernández, HNBA National President.

The HNBA Speaks Out Against Proposed Legislation In Arizona That Erodes Protections Afforded by the U.S. Constitution
April 21, 2010 – The Hispanic National Bar Association, the national voice of the Hispanic legal community, speaks out against proposed legislation in Arizona, as it raises grave constitutional issues. The Arizona Senate has passed and sent to Arizona Governor Jan Brewer Senate Bill (“SB”) 1070, a bill that seeks to criminalize undocumented immigrants by making it a crime to be in the state without documentation. Moreover, SB 1070 directs police officers to inquire as to immigration status on a “reasonable suspicion” that an individual is undocumented.

HNBA Commends the Confirmation of the Honorable Marisa J. Demeo to the Superior Court of the District of Columbia
April 21, 2010 – The Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA) applauds the Senate confirmation of the Honorable Marisa J. Demeo to be an Associate Judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. The Senate voted to confirm Judge Demeo for a 15-year term by a vote of 66 to 32. In particular, the HNBA applauds Majority Leader Reid’s leadership in calling for a Senate vote on Judge Demeo’s nomination.

HNBA Commends Justice Stevens for His Service and Looks Forward to President Obama’s Nomination of a Replacement
April 9, 2010 –Today, the nation learned that Justice John Paul Stevens will retire at the end of this U.S. Supreme Court term. Román D. Hernández, HNBA National President, speaking on behalf of the association, commended Justice Stevens for his service to the American people. Mr. Hernández stated, “Justice Stevens has contributed greatly to this nation and to American jurisprudence through his 34 years of distinguished service on our nation’s highest Court. We take this opportunity to publicly thank him, and to acknowledge his steadfast devotion to the law.”
